Juho decided it was time to move on, and decided to quit. Sami Perttula was asked to take his place, but who is this guy?
In April I interviewed him, just after the show in Leeuwarden, Holland. He agreed to tell a little more about himself.

‘What was your first acquaintance with the accordion, and why did you choose this instrument? ‘

‘When I was really young, I saw an accordion player for the first time. It felt like an illusion, he pushed those buttons and there was music coming out of the instrument, it felt like magic to me. Most kids like accordion, with all those buttons and so did I. Soon I got my own accordion and entered accordion classes. Of course it is hard for a child to sit still and practice, kids love to do other things too, like playing outside. But my parents always encouraged, or maybe I should say ‘pushed’, me to study’, smiled Sami.

‘When I was eleven years old I started to listen to heavy metal, like most of the kids, and it grabbed me. That’s why I started to play piano and electric guitar; I played guitar for five years, but ended up with my accordion again.’

‘Although I got accordion lessons, I entered the music school providing musical training which prepares for professional studies only when I reached the age of 16, which was rather late. We had nice teachers; one of them took part in Trio fratres, an accordion group of three that played heavy metal from the eighties. ’

‘At the conservatory I studied classical music but I was also one of a trio, and we played Finnish metal covers, I even wrote some music in the style of Apocalytica in those days,’ laughs Sami, ‘but I don’t want to be remembered to those songs, they were not good at all.’

‘What did you do after you finished the conservatory?’

‘After completing the 3-year course for performing arts at conservatory I decided to continue my studies in university of applied sciences to become an accordion teacher. After 5 years of studying I am still busy there , maybe graduating takes a bit more longer time in my case’ laughs Sami.

‘What did you think when Jonne asked you to join Korpiklaani?’

Sami said with a grin: ‘My first thought was: ‘Can this really happen to me?!’ Playing in a heavy metal band is something that I always wanted. I like the mood at Korpiklaani’s shows; people are cheerful and happy; they dance. Very different from classical concerts where most of the people are looking seriously and sitting still. Many metal bands have a ‘grave and dark’ image, you never see the members smile on stage, that’s very different here, and I like it.’

Your first concert was in Gdansk, on April 10. How did you feel?

‘I felt very insecure, because we only had one rehearsal with whole band. This band has been working together for many years, and I’m the new guy. This tour was just what I needed to get routine. If you only play one concert and weeks later another one, it is impossible to get enough experience.’

‘Apart from playing in Korpiklaani, what other things do you do, or want to do?’

‘Of course I have some dreams: I want to study more music. I’d love to attend Theatre school and get an education as sound designer. I already composed music for modern dance and animation.
Composing school attracts me, and also electronic music and of course folk music. I want to add effects and loops in my playing, like Kimmo Pohjonen does. He is one of my idols, he is not a typical, traditional accordionist. For me It would be nasty to learn to some totally new and minimalistic instruments like finger piano or Tibetan singing bowl and in that way try to find new ways to understand music‘

Music is very important in my life, and I want to find my own way.

——————————————-

Entrevista a Sami Perttula

Interview with Sami Perttula Juho Kauppinen was the accordion player of Korpiklaani for many years.
